Ever since Kristi was 5 years old, she remembers planning menus and cooking dinners for her family. In fact, when her grandmother passed away a few years ago, Kristi was helping clean out her house and found one of those menus she had written for a family dinner when she was 7.
Originally from the "Show-Me State" -Kristi Wokoma, then Brown, moved from Kansas City, Missouri in 1984. Prior to moving one of Kristi's greatest encouragers, her father demanded that she go to the library to research and discover what her purpose were and her pursuits would be. Kristi defiantly went to the library and looked for someone to do the work for her, the librarian asked her what she liked to do and Kristi flippedly responded, "I like to eat, cook and have fun with my friends." The librarian pointed her to the index cards to look up key words, and at the age of 13, Kristi found her purpose; to be a chef.
Upon graduating from Seattle Central with a degree in Culinary Arts, Kristi worked in several known catering venues (Nordstrom Catering, Tuxedo and Tennis Shoes, to name a few) managing a high-end restaurant, and even spent a few years working as a sous-chef at the acclaimed Kingfish Cafe. But after enduring a few unpleasant experiences, she wanted to move away from cooking and become self-employed. Instead of cooking, she began to focus her energy on planning intimate events for couples and eventually catering.
Those discoveries led her to create That Brown Girl Catering! Now in her "official" fifth year of service, her reputation is continuing to grow to tremendous heights, known for fantastic ethnic flavors and innovative fusion menus. And looking forward to many more strides of growth in the coming year!
